Work-in-Progress: Steve Hughes
“Junkyard Farm” is the title story from the November 2019 issue of “Stupor,” a zine that I’ve been writing and publishing since 1995. My collaborator in chief for the issue was Alice Schneider. She conceived and rendered the oil paintings for the backdrop of each story. First, together, she and I gathered the stories from patrons at local bars, including Kelly's, then Outer Limits, and The Painted Lady. In one evening we recorded 22 stories. I then transcribed them, selected seven for this issue, then revised, and wrote in an effort to discover big truths like about what it means to be alive. The stories in “Junkyard Farm” acknowledge the connection between animals and us as a people. Just as our lives are somehow better with pets so this “Stupor” is better too. In response to social isolation guidelines, Kresge Arts in Detroit asked Kresge Artist Fellows and Gilda Award recipients to give us a glimpse into their current and recent projects. Participating artists received stipends of $150, a quick response pivot of resources that could be implemented by the program as an immediate - albeit small level - of support to Detroit area artists.
