Work-in-Progress: Darryl DeAngelo Terrell
I’ve been working with an alter ego by the name of Dion for the better of 3 years, though Dion I have been thinking about what it is to be desired, and to Desire self. I have been doing so by tapping into the visual, and literary culture that is reminiscent of my childhood.
Item that I’ve always seen as beautiful, lush, bold, expensive, and even gaudy. Thing like my sister Tarita, Long finger nails with the wild art on them, The name plated bamboo Door Knocker earring, my sister, Yvette wore in her 20’s, the different braiding techniques, and wig that my sister Tiffany would apply to her clients heads, even the floor-length Raccoon Fox Fur Coat that my mother wears to church during the colder months. These have all been solidified in my mind as the black femme, black hood, Aesthetic, which is very much important for the continuation with Dion.
In response to social isolation guidelines, Kresge Arts in Detroit asked Kresge Artist Fellows and Gilda Award recipients to give us a glimpse into their current and recent projects. Participating artists received stipends of $150, a quick response pivot of resources that could be implemented by the program as an immediate - albeit small level - of support to Detroit area artists.
