Work-in-Progress: Drew Philp

During the last year I’ve undertaken a fairly rigorous self-study of video game narrative. I’ve always tried to bring progressive and possibly difficult ideas to large numbers of people via storytelling, and video games offer an amazing near-untapped opportunity to meet people where they are. As an industry, video games make more money than films— there’s an incredible chance to change lots of minds and perceptions using the medium, especially in young men. I’ve been working remotely in Detroit for a London-based gaming company, I’ve recently completed a gaming-based spec teleplay, and I’ll be presenting some of my findings on narrative to the Ann Arbor Chapter of the International Game Developers Association once the virus clears up.

In response to social isolation guidelines, Kresge Arts in Detroit asked Kresge Artist Fellows and Gilda Award recipients to give us a glimpse into their current and recent projects. Participating artists received stipends of $150, a quick response pivot of resources that could be implemented by the program as an immediate - albeit small level - of support to Detroit area artists.
