Work-in-Progress: M. Saffell Gardner

This video is an in-progress work and a tribute to pre- and post- slavery railroad workers. The workers were responsible for digging track bed for the railroad which would get goods to market from upstate New York to New York City while still fresh. My process is to create video paintings in motion layer and edit over actual photographs from old rail lines. My vision for this video is to add sound and project the completed work at my studio.

In response to social isolation guidelines, Kresge Arts in Detroit asked Kresge Artist Fellows and Gilda Award recipients to give us a glimpse into their current and recent projects. Participating artists received stipends of $150, a quick response pivot of resources that could be implemented by the program as an immediate - albeit small level - of support to Detroit area artists.
