Work-in-Progress: Robert Sestok
The piece that I have been working on prior to and during the quarantine is for an upcoming group show at MOCAD this summer (postponed). The show is made of 11 pairs, and 22 artists collaborating in a piece of art reflecting all genres. My collaboration is with Kurt Novak, a Bronx-based artist. The piece is a combination of narrative and abstract ideas using welded steel as the medium.”
I think there is an element of carnival atmosphere that carries tones of the mysterious. Kurt has chosen to create figures of both sexes and I have created aspects that I have made from leftover cut-out metal, formed in reaction to Kurt’s initial images. One of the hardest things about creating this piece has been determining a title, that remains to be determined.
In response to social isolation guidelines, Kresge Arts in Detroit asked Kresge Artist Fellows and Gilda Award recipients to give us a glimpse into their current and recent projects. Participating artists received stipends of $150, a quick response pivot of resources that could be implemented by the program as an immediate - albeit small level - of support to Detroit area artists.
