Work-in-Progress: Kristin Beaver

Here is a painting I just finished yesterday. It’s 9x7”, oil on paper, ‘Hope’s Mom’. I have always treasured my parents old photo album they created before I was born. I used to take it from the shelf and carefully look thru it often as a child. In many ways it influenced the kind of paintings I make. I was fascinated by how different my parents looked decades prior, different hair styles, vintage clothing. The 60s and 70s we etched into my awareness and from high school on I leaned toward that style and aesthetic for clothing, furniture, etc.

Recently I put out a call on Instagram and Facebook to have people send me their vintage family photos to paint, because I love looking thru other family albums as well. It’s been wonderful to receive them. This is the first painting of many from this request. I love how the young woman in this photo/painting was so apathetic to the others conversation and the photographer at the picnic

In response to social isolation guidelines, Kresge Arts in Detroit asked Kresge Artist Fellows and Gilda Award recipients to give us a glimpse into their current and recent projects. Participating artists received stipends of $150, a quick response pivot of resources that could be implemented by the program as an immediate - albeit small level - of support to Detroit area artists.
