Work-in-Progress: Rashuan Rucker

The work that I am currently engaged in is series of printmaking and mixed media works that speak to the narrative of my upbringing in the South and tells the story of family. The work is based on poetry written by my father about our family history and the red clay of North Carolina that birthed it. The poetry and my work will speak of sanctuaries for black folks, lynchings, reunions, love, and working the land. My hope is that they are viewed as an intergenerational conversation between a father and son relationship and also as a tribute to our foundation and the span of those relationships. These final works will be presented in an exhibition in 2021.

In response to social isolation guidelines, Kresge Arts in Detroit asked Kresge Artist Fellows and Gilda Award recipients to give us a glimpse into their current and recent projects. Participating artists received stipends of $150, a quick response pivot of resources that could be implemented by the program as an immediate - albeit small level - of support to Detroit area artists.
